Moy Davitts are into the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship final after a hard fought and absorbing win over Davitts on Saturday afternoon.

Played in a second-half deluge of wind and rain, the East Mayo men just about had enough to get over the line thanks to a monster free from Cian McHale in the 59th minute.

The Moysiders trailed for almost the entire match, only taking the lead for the first time in the 53rd minute but they led when it counted at the final whistle.

The first half was as poor a half of football as you are likely to see this season, and the scores were level at a point each in the 22nd minute. Seven first-half wides from Davitts played their part in the low-scoring affair.

Davitts held the lead by 0-3 to 0-2 at the break but pushed that out to five points within the first two minutes of the second half from a Jack Melvin free and a well-taken goal by Niall Treacy.

Moy Davitts were unlucky not to find the net themselves on 35 minutes when Brian Reape fisted a Seán Kelly shot against the crossbar and this attack proved the catalyst for their comeback, getting themselves level by the 44th minute through doubles from Ronan Clarke and Cian McHale and a well taken Seán Kelly point.

In a frantic finish, both sides traded points until McHale’s late winner.

Kelly, Ronan Clarke, Cian McHale and Anthony Jordan excelled for the victors with Jack Melvin, Niall Treacy and the ageless Colm Boyle unfortunate not to have another day out in three weeks.

Moy Davitts will meet Crossmolina in the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship final.
