Mayo LGFA Senior Football Championship Round 2

Burrishoole 0-12 Knockmore 2-9

In Newport

As two of the main contenders for the senior championship met in Newport, a close game delivered the result many expected.

Cormac Reape’s side got the better of Colm McManamon’s team earlier in the year, and it was the exact same outcome on Sunday morning.

When Burrishoole were in the lead by a point after 19 minutes, midfielder Sarah Baynes picked up a yellow card and was sent to the sin bin for ten minutes.

Burrishoole tagged on scores thanks to the prominent Maria Cannon. As injury time loomed, Knockmore’s Lara Sweeney was sent to the sin bin by referee Pat Conlon as the hosts led 0-6 0-3 at the interval.

The home side pushed their lead to four just ten minutes in. However, up at the other end, Knockmore were awarded a penalty after Shauna Howley was fouled.

The former county star stepped up and buried the spot kick, and the reigning champions gathered momentum and pushed on with Howley leading the way.

Maria Cannon reduced the deficit but Clodagh Keane got Knockmore’s second goal and that was surely that. The reigning county champions defended impressively and held on to get the win.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
