Mayo Intermediate Football Championship Group 2 Round 3

Davitts 1-8

Hollymount-Carramore 1-7

In Garrymore

IT was not the thriller that some had expected, but it still took one kick of a ball from Dylan Gallagher to separate Davitts and Hollymount-Carramore on a wet evening in Garrymore.

Goals at the start of either half were the most exciting moments of a South Mayo derby that was high on tension but relatively low in drama.

The game did not live up to its pre-match hype as soggy conditions disrupted both sides’ momentum.

Davitts took an early two-point lead through two lovely Dylan Gallagher points before Conor Heneghan fed Jack Keane to bury a rocket of a goal into the roof of the net.

However, Hollymount-Carramore could not build on their momentum and didn't score again until the 23rd minute when Matthew Morris pointed their first from play.

Davitts racked up six points before the break, with three coming from Intermediate championship top scorer Dylan Gallagher (one free), two from Niall Treacy (one free) and a free from Jack Melvin.

Carrying a slender 0-6 1-2 half-time lead, Hollymount levelled through Conor Heneghan before Niall Treacy won a penalty that Jack Melvin converted to put Davitts back in front.

Liam Nyland’s men failed to score for the next 20 minutes, during which time Hollymount-Carramore re-took the lead with scores from Conor Heneghan (2), Jack Keane and Enda Maloney.

Luckily for Davitts, Dylan Gallagher was the coolest man in South Mayo as he slotted over a leveller and a winner in the dying minutes to secure a home quarter-final for the border men and leave Hollymount-Carramore in second place in the group.

A full report plus reaction from both camps will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
