Mayo Ladies Senior Football Championship Round 1
Knockmore 3-15
Charlestown 0-7
In Knockmore
KNOCKMORE began the defence of their senior county title in ideal fashion by seeing off an injury-stricken Charlestown side this morning.
Without their injured star forward Deirdre Doherty, Charlestown struggled to score for long periods against the county champions.
The hosts, despite having two late withdrawals in Katie Munnelly and Emily Reape, went comfortably ahead when Player of The Match Cliodhna Flynn smashed home a goal at the start of the second quarter.
The saffron and blue were superior with the wind behind them and held their hosts to a single score from play before accumulating a 1-10 0-1 half-time lead.
Charlestown’s faint hopes were dashed shortly after the throw-in when Hannah Reape aided Clodagh Keane for Knockmore’s second goal which put them fifteen points up.
The girls from the east never gave in and clocked up six points through Nicole McLoughlin (4) and Chelsea Doherty (2).
The reigning Division league and senior county champions eased off the throttle ever so slightly but kept attacking right until the end when wing-forward Amy O’Connor finished their third goal.
A full report, plus reaction from Knockmore’s Shauna Howley and Cormac Reape, will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News Sport.
