Mayo Junior Football Championship Round 2

Ardagh 1-13 Shrule-Glencorrib 0-9

In Ardagh

ARDAGH left Shrule-Glencorrib winless in their five-team championship group with a victory on North Mayo soil this afternoon.

Without setting the field alight, Paul Moran’s men secured their second win from two games - which leaves them at the top of their group table alongside unbeaten Northern Gaels.

Stephen Rochford was the main man for the hosts, who were never really troubled by a Shrule-Glencorrib side that found scores from play nearly impossible to come by.

Brendan Ryan’s free-taking alone wasn’t going to cut it for the South Mayo side, with only Shane Mellet and Eoghan Hennelly scoring from play.

A twelfth-minute goal from the impressive Stephen Rochford gave Ardagh breathing room. From then on, the gap never got tighter than two points.

On a day when Mayo senior James Carr was effectively double-marked, Lee Traynor contributed three points in a fine display while Brendan Carr also stood out at midfield.

The game produced very few goal chances and reached a seemingly inevitable conclusion as the hosts finished with a solid but unspectacular win.

A full report, plus reaction from Ardagh’s James Carr, will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News Sport.
