Mayo Intermediate Football Championship Round 1
Burrishoole 1-14
Islandeady 2-10
In Newport
EVERYTHING good about the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship was on full display in sunny Newport today (Sunday) as Burrishoole prevailed a shoot-out which enthralled from start to finish.
A missed injury-time Bryan O'Flaherty free to level the game was just one of numerous dramatic moments between two neighbouring clans who spared no quarter in pursuit of victory.
A good start stood to the barony boys, who went 1-3 to 0-1 ahead after five minutes thanks to a goal from centre-forward Fintan McManamon and points from Adam Rehill, Jason Doherty and a belter from downtown from the aftermentioned McManamon.
Inspired by the excellent Levi Barrett, Islandeady replied with a goal from Brendan McCormack, raising another green flag later in the half when Barrett sent Eoin Mullarkey the wrong way from a penalty.
Darragh Joyce (2, 1 free), Brendan Gibbons (2) and Cailin Joyce all got on the scoreboard to see Islandeady into a 2-5 1-6 half-time lead.
Things went from bad to worse for Burrishoole when they lost midfielder Joe McLoughlin to a second yellow card early in the second half.
The hosts battled valiantly throughout the second half, only sealing the deal in the last minute of added time when Colin Guilfoyle struck the winner before Islandeady won a free down the other end - which newly-introduced substitute Bryan O'Flaherty under-hit before the final whistle heralded a hard-fought derby day win for Burrishoole.
A full report, plus reaction from both camps, will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News Sport.
