The Westport minors comfortably secured a place in the Minor A final this evening in Westport.
Mayo Minor A Championship
Westport 2-16
Crossmolina 0-8
It took Westport's minors a while to find their feet, but when they did at the start of the second half they simply had too much quality all over the field for a sluggish Crossmolina side in this county A semi-final.
This was expected to be a high scoring encounter but the north Mayo lads were denied the services of star Mayo minor forward, Kobe McDonald, who is on a trip to Australia, and they never really threatened despite a decent start to the game.
It was two first half goals from corner back Michael Geraghty and corner forward Killian Conway that laid the foundation for Westport's victory, giving them a 2-04 to 0-5 lead at the break.
Dylan Flynn, Crossmolina's best player on the evening, narrowed the gap to four straight after the break but then Westport clicked into gear and reeled off six points in seven minutes from six different players (Micheal McDonnell, Evan Durkan, Rian Durkan, Joey Holmes, Jack O'Malley and Tom Lambert) to put the game to bed.
PJ Foy and his backroom will be happy with this overall display, which sets up a mouthwatering Minor A final with near neighbours Castlebar Mitchels.
A full match report will be carried in next week's edition of The Mayo News.
