Mayo Senior League Division Relegation Final

Charlestown 1-17 Kiltane 1-10

In Charlestown

Playing with fourteen men for most of the game did not halt Charlestown from marching triumphantly out of this relegation play-off at the expense of Kiltane, who will play their league football in Division 2 in 2025.

The hosts were more consistent, had more possession and were better around the middle against a Kiltane team that lost former Mayo player Mikey Sweeney to injury early in the second half.

Paul Towey, who had just returned from the United States the day previously, kicked 1-8 in a game where Charlestown were rarely seriously threatened - bar in the 21st minute when Josh Ginty's goal put a point between the sides.

The loss of Charlestown centre-back Jack Corley to a second yellow card shortly after Ginty's goal had the potential to set up a very tight relegation tussle.

Instead, the hosts were barely shaken and went in 0-9 to 1-3 ahead thanks to impressive showing from Towey, Patrick Goldrick and Matthew Leneghan.

The departure of injured Mikey Sweeney and a Paul Towey goal put Kiltane five points behind and etched the writing firmly on the wall for the Erris men.

The guests had the occasional goal chance but only scored from play one from the rest of the game as Charlestown saw it out with seven to spare.

A full report plus reaction from Charlestown's Paul Towey will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
