Westport 1-15 Kilmeena 0-6

KILMEENA men will likely keep to the Buckfield Inn instead of McBride’s in the coming weeks after their neighbours dealt them a twelve-point defeat in sunny Westport this afternoon.

Missing twelve first-team players, a young Kilmeena team met a Westport side that were a class above them and stifled their attacking game all day.

Killian Kilkelly and Colm Moran shot twelve points between them on a day when the Covies had several impressive performers.

Kilmeena – who had the services of star forward Caolach Halligan – took 22 minutes to open their account when Darragh Slattery pointed.

By then, Westport were already six up and had seen two goals scuppered by the reflexes of Kilmeena goalie Paul Groden.

Neither side had a shortage of tough tackling, but Westport's skill and speed proved too much for Kilmeena to handle.

Shane Conway's men – who were also missing their fair share of players – pushed even further ahead in the second half as the country boys had to live off scraps.

Indeed, Westport's 0-8 0-1 half-time lead flattered Kilmeena, who were dealt a final blow when Kilkelly teed up Ronan Geraghty to palm the ball into the net just before the full-time whistle.

There will be a full report plus reaction from Kilmeena manager John Reilly and Westport's Brian McDermott in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
