Mayo Football League Division 1B

Garrymore 2-16 Kilmeena 2-10

in Kilmeena

THE football was every bit as hot as the balmy summer evening as Garrymore came out on top in an all-out attacking shootout in sun-kissed South Mayo this evening.

A depleted Kilmeena – who had to call upon old crusaders John Reilly and Pat Mulchrone –drifted off course at times but kept things honest thanks to an excellent display from Caolach Halligan.

However, an impressive haul of six points from the Meath man weren’t enough to match Garrymore’s spread of six scorers over the hour.

The exchanges were honest and even in the first half, with Conor Kelly hitting an outrageous lobbed goal for Kilmeena before Aaron Hughes followed up with a thunderbolt of a three-pointer for Garry’.

Martin Maloney’s men gained the upper hand when Mark Gibbons raised a second green flag before his teammates added five more points before the break.

That left the scores at 2-10 to 1-5 in Garrymore’s favour in a game that was far from over.

Kilmeena conjured yet another miraculous goal, this time from Darragh Keaveney, as the marauding Caolach Halligan continued to shine throughout the second half.

The Clew Bay boys narrowed the gap to four at one point, but the power of Trevor Nally, Shane Nally, Darren Quinn, Aaron Hughes and company proved a bridge too far for the newly promoted senior side.

A full match report, plus reaction from both camps, will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
