CONNACHT MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Galway 1-6

Mayo 2-13

Tuam

REIGNING provnicial champions, Mayo, continued their dominance over Galway tonight with their third win over the home side in three years in the famed Tuam Stadium. The victory was as comprehensive as the scoreline suggests as a highly-impressive Mayo team utterly dominated the hosts from first whistle to last.

One didn't have to be a house-painter to realise the writing was on the wall after just a few minutes of this beautiful game in Tuam. Mayo were utterly in charge all over the field, playing football with guile, style and delivery while Galway were struggling everywhere.

Throw in the fact that Mayo were scoring at will and not even the great St Jarlath, on whose back garden the game was played, could help the young men in maroon and white.

The Mayo forwards were catching all the sparkle but the work of the boys in the middle and further back provided their ammunition. The collective hard work of the Mayo team was a joy to behold and Galway had no hint of an answer to it.

Mayo led 1-8 to 0-2 at the break and could have been further in front if the ball had run their way in front of goal.

Harry McHale hit the net for the leaders after 12 minyutes when he got on the end of a move involving Kobe McDonald and the impressive Conor Moriarty to smash a shot high into the net.

Parke's Evan Walsh was the star of the first half with four points to his name while wing-back David Hurley and corner-forward Oisin Deane also caught the eye.

Galway gained a bit of hope just seconds after half time when one of their best, Charlie Killeen, drilled home a goal but that was as good as it got for the hosts. Mayo responded immerdiately and were 2-10 to 1-3 clear after 43 minutes, their second goal coming from Deane after fine play from Conor Coghill, Daithi Butler and Walsh.

The final quarter was a procession as everyone awaited the final whistle, but some Mayo players still managed to stand out, including Josh Moyles, Owen Loughney, Mark Noonan, team captain Tom Hession and the hard-working Dylan Flynn.

Mayo play Leitrim next Friday evening in Castlebar in the next round.

A full match report and reaction from joint-manager David Heaney will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
