In Ballinasloe

The Mayo Minor camogie team will make a trip north to Cavan for an All-Ireland final after they saw off the Breffni girls with twenty-one points to spare at the weekend.

A sun-drenched Duggan Park in Ballinasloe was the venue for the latest meet of these two teams, who last met back in March in the group stage when Mayo defeated by 21 points.

On Saturday the stakes were much higher, but a goal in either half from the excellent Cathy Greally was enough to secure a comfortable win for Mayo.

Cavan set up differently for this encounter, employing a sweeper to strengthen their defence.

This worked well for Cavan in the opening quarter as Mayo settled into the game.

The first quarter was closely contested with scores for both teams keeping the contest in the mix. In the second period of the opening half Mayo started to find their rhythm.

By half-time, Brendan Tunney’s charges had built up a seven-point lead and led by 1-9 to 1-2, with Grace Ruxton grabbing the goal for Cavan.

In the second half Mayo continued to exert their dominance with Player of the Match Hannah Hauttman, Cathy Greally and Kate Tener keeping the scoreboard ticking and the excellent Mayo defence keeping Cavan to one point.

Mayo introduced their subs who added new energy and kept the pressure on a tiring Cavan side. In the end it was a convincing victory for the Mayo girls who finished on a scoreline of 2-17 to Cavan’s 1-4.

Mayo will meet Tyrone in the Electric Ireland All-Ireland Minor C Camogie final on Sunday, April 8, at Drumlane GAA, Milltown, Co Cavan.
