THE bonfires blazed into the late hours of Sunday night around the hills of Aughagower, which welcomed home its latest All-Ireland Champion when Shane Heraty won the All-Ireland Over-35s Single Handball final.
Heraty overcame Darren O’Toole from Wexford in a hard-fought contest in the new handball centre in Croke Park.
The Aughagower man saw off his opponent on a score of 21-8 to 21-11.
Heraty was joined by friends, family and supporters after his win, which saw him become the tenth All-Ireland champion to represent the club.
He added to his previous one-wall national title in what was his eleventh All-Ireland final since his juvenile and college days.
“We were delighted to see Shane win All-Ireland gold in Croke Park’s marvellous new handball facility,” said Aughagower Handball Club President Seosamh Ó Maolchróin.
“We came down from Dublin after so many All-Ireland football finals empty-handed, so it was great to return home to Aughagower with an All-Ireland medal. We are truly delighted for Shane and are proud to call him a member of our club.
“This success, and the success of the handball club as a whole, is down to the dedication of our members and our coaches, who have worked tirelessly to develop the sport in our area down through the years,” added Ó Maolchróin.
This coincides with an ongoing revival of Aughagower Handball Club, which currently has 36 competitors in its ongoing club competition.
In February, the club successfully hosted their first tournament since before the pandemic.
The date for the finals of the club’s current competition will be announced shortly.
