Search starts for Sheridan’s successor

Outgoing Mayo Under-20 manager not looking to stay on
THE search for the next Mayo Under-20 football manager looks set to begin later this month.
Last night’s meeting of the Mayo GAA Board was told by chairman, Seamus Tuohy, that he had been in contact with Maurice Sheridan, ‘who has now completed his three-year term’ and that the outgoing manager ‘will not be seeking an extension to that term’.
Sheridan led Mayo to Connacht Under-20 championship finals in 2021 and 2022, losing to Roscommon and Sligo respectively.
Mayo also lost to Sligo in this year’s provincial semi-final.
“On behalf of the Board, I’d like to thank Maurice for his commitment over the last three years and what he’s done for Mayo at the under-20 grade,” said the Mayo GAA chief.
“I’d just like to wish him the best for the future and also thank his backroom team.
“We will be having a review with Maurice, but due to commitments that won’t be happening until after June 10.”
Tuohy went to tell club delegates that, following the review with the outgoing manager, the recruitment process to find Sheridan’s successor will begin.
“Hopefully that manager will be in place before the start of the adult championships in mid-August,” said the chairman.
“As most of you know, there is a debate going on presently whether it will be Under-19 or Under-20 grade for 2024. . I’m told by Croke Park that that consultation is going to take place over the next couple of weeks and there will be a motion going to a Special Congress in September as regards whether the age group will be Under-19 or Under-20.”
