Mayo Masters lose out to Galway

Tribesmen too good for John Reilly's men

Mayo Masters lose out to Galway

Mayo's Colm Cafferkey in action against Galway.

Gaelic Masters Football Championship

Round 2
Galway 0-11
Mayo 0-8

THE Mayo Masters only landed one score from play as they were seen off by an impressive Galway team at Clonberne on Wednesday evening.
John Reilly’s men took a full 24 minutes to land a score of any description as Galway charged into a 0-6 to 0-0 lead in the first 20 minutes.
Despite an improved second half — where The Neale’s Paddy Hopkins shot five points from frees) — the visitors just hadn’t enough in the tank to get over a Galway team that had most of the hard work done.
Paddy Hopkins, Declan Doyle and John Reilly all impressed in the green and red while Achill’s Colm Cafferkey also impressed on his return.
Galway’s Diarmuid Flaherty landed 0-8 (four frees) as the Tribesman shot six points before Hopkins opened Mayo’s account.
Mayo got better as the second half went on but were overly dependent on Hopkins’ free-taking.
Jarlath McDonagh grabbed Mayo’s only score from play as the visitors got the gap down to two points at one point.
John Reilly’s men forced their hosts into a mad scramble to clear the ball after Myles Fallon worked a stop out of the Galway goalie.
Diarmuid Flaherty had the final say with a point in the 61st minute that gave Galway comfort and – ultimately - victory.
