SHANE Moynihan, a councillor for the Palmerstown-Fonthill five-seat electoral region, won a seat for Fianna Fáil in the Dublin Mid-West constituency at the weekend. Shane is married to Teresa Walsh, formerly of Murneen, Claremorris.
Born in Dublin, his parents were from Waterford and Tipperary and he has a strong affinity with the ethos and culture of rural Ireland. Teresa, a member of the teaching profession, is the daughter of Margaret (nee McGreal) and Quan Walsh who now reside in Claremorris. Her uncle Denis McGreal, a retired Garda Sergeant, lives in the home place in Murneen.
Teresa’s brother, Denis, is married to Róisín Bhamjee from Clare (her father was a Labour TD for that constituency in the 1990s) and they now reside in Melbourne. They were following the counts closely from afar and were thrilled when Shane got over the line.
Teresa’s parents (Margaret and Quan) and her uncle Denis were at the count centre in Abbotstown to witness Shane being declared elected on Sunday night.
He secured 4,746 votes on the first count and was lying in fourth place in the 5-seat constituency. He progressed steadily through the counts and was on 7,231 after the thirteenth and final count to take the fourth seat ahead of Paul Gogarty on 7106, the former Green Party TD who regained his seat as an Independent on this occasion. Sinn Féin candidates, Eoin Ó Broin and Mark Ward, took the first two seats with Emer Higgins of Fine Gael taking the third seat.
I am honoured to have been elected as a TD for Dublin Mid-West.

I am incredibly grateful to everyone who voted for me, whether a number one or a later preference.
Thank you to my incredible team for travelling this journey with me and believing in me.

“We are all thrilled with the outcome and it was great to have the folks from Murneen here for the declaration. We love going down to Mayo and are really looking forward to spending a few days in Murneen and Claremorris during Christmas. Have the kettle on!” said Shane.
