A second recount of the Swinford Local Electoral Area has been ordered by Mayo Returning Officer, John Condon.

The dramatic turn of events, a second recount of the four-seat area is to take place at 8.45pm tonight (Monday) after one vote yet again separated John Sheahan of Sinn Féin and councillor Neil Cruise.

This came following a lengthy first recount, which concluded with a public briefing of candidates by Mr Condon, who then announced that there had been no change to the total number of votes obtained by Cllr John Caulfield (1,642), Cllr Neil Cruise (1,637) and Cllr John Sheahan (1,636)

Cllr Cruise and Cllr Caulfield both embraced Mr Sheahan before he met with other Sinn Féin members before requesting a second recount.

Another meeting between representatives from all parties occurred on the floor of the count centre before Mr Condon acceded to Sinn Féin's request for a second recount.

The first recount arose after Mr Sheahan requested it after Cllrs Caulfield, Cruise and Forkan won the last three remaining seats in the Swinford Local Electoral Area without reaching the quota of 1,744.

Sitting Sinn Féin councillor Gerry Murray was elected on the third count after exceeding the quota.
