Gerry Murray (SF) after getting re-elected to the Mayo County Council
Day two of the counting for the Mayo Local Election 2024 is already far advanced and there are still many empty seats to fill.
The biggest sigh of relief will probably come from the Sinn Féin camp. After Donna Hyland's failure to gain a seat in Castlebar yesterday, the hopes for the party to make inroads into the Mayo County Council were dealt a further blow today when Rosaleen Dixon Lally couldn't break the phalanx of successful sitting councillors in the Belmullet LEA. This was a particularly tough pill to swallow as Belmullet is the home base for Sinn Féin's Mayo TD Rose Conway-Walsh All eyes then turned to Swinford and especially to Gerry Murray who would not disappoint. He was elected on the third count, after topping the polls since the first count. And this could even mean, that Sinn Féin might even get a second seat in Swinford.
Regarding Westport there haven't been any candidates elected yet and the counting for the Ballina area won't start before either Swinford or Westport are finished.
