No change predicted in Belmullet EA with Coyle, McNamara and Carey expected to hold onto their seats

Long-standing Geesala-based councillor Gerry Coyle looks set to be elected to Mayo County Council for the sixth time according to tallies in the Belmullet Electoral Area.

With the majority of boxes now tallied in the Belmullet Electoral Area, the Fine Gael councillor and Achill Fianna Fáil councillor Paul McNamara are on course to take the first two seats while sitting councillor Seán Carey (FF) is favourite to hold onto the third and final seat.

The challenge by Sinn Féin candidate Rosaleen Lally from Belmullet does not seem to have materialised. The party had targeted taking Carey's seat but when boxes from the Belmullet area were opened it became clear that Carey was able to keep one step ahead of Lally.

Coyle was also able to consolidate his vote in Erris and looks set to be reelected to Mayo County Council. The former Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council was first elected in 1999 and has been elected at every election since.

In the south of the county, McNamara saw off the challenge of Tiernaur-based sheep farmer, Pat Chambers who had fought a strong campaign. The Fianna Fáil party in Achill ensured that the majority of the parish's vote went to McNamara and he looks set to be elected for the third successive local election.
