Worried faces at the Sinn Féin tallying desk.
The full tally from the Castlebar Electoral Area has revealed that an anticipated challenge from Sinn Fein for a seat in the county town has failed to materialise.
Sinn Fein candidates Donna Hyland and Maura O'Sullivan tallied just 3.9 and 1.4 percent respectively meaning they are highly unlikely to be in the running for one of the seven seats on offer.
Five of the sitting councillors: Michael Kilcoyne, Ger Deere, Al McDonnell, Blackie Gavin and Cyril Burke all look in a strong position to hold on to their seats but the other two sitting councillors, Donna Sheridan and Martin McLoughlin, could face a challenge from Independent Stephen Kerr in the race for the final two seats.
Sheridan sits on 6.3 percent, Kerr on 6.1 and McLoughlin on 5.5. Kerr will be hoping that he can stay in the race by attracting transfers from other Independents in the field when they are eliminated, while Sheridan and McLoughlin will likewise be hoping that transfers from their party colleagues when elected will get them over the line.
Counting proper of the votes in the Castlebar Electoral Area is now set to take place in the Velvet Room of the TF Royal Theatre.
