Voting in the local and European elections in Mayo ended at 10pm tonight. The ballot boxes from all 235 polling station in Mayo will now be transferred overnight to the TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar in preparation for the start of the counting of votes, which begins at 9am tomorrow morning.
Both Castlebar and Claremorris Local Electoral Area (LEAs) have the most polling stations, with 47 each; followed by Ballina with 41. Belmullet is next with 41, followed by Swinford with 31 and Westport has the least polling stations with 30.
The first boxes to be opened tomorrow morning will be from the Castlebar Electoral Area, and it is anticipated that a full tally should be available from 11am. The next boxes to be opened will be from the Claremorris Electoral Area, followed by the Belmullet Electoral. It is hoped to get the final results from these electoral areas at some stage on Saturday, or possible into the early hours of Sunday morning. Final results from the Swinford, Ballina and Westport are not expected until Sunday.
