Calm before the storm: A counting room in the TF Royal Castlebar.
The votes have been cast in Mayo. The polling stations closed last night at 10 pm. All 73 candidates for the Local Election will turn their attention to the count centre in Castlebar now.
It will start today at 9am with the boxes being opened, then the ballot papers from the Local and European Elections will be separated from each other and afterwards we will soon get the first tallies in. That will be a moment of truth for many candidates as they will be able to tax their chances of getting elected.
There are many questions to be answered: How many women will make it on to the Mayo County Council? Will there be a shake up in seats after the referendum defeats for the government parties in March this year? How will Sinn Féin do after a recent dip in their poll ratings? Will Louisburgh get a councillor again?
The counts for the European Election is not expected to start before Monday and may take some days to conclude with 27 candidates in the field.
