Independent Ireland have announced Donal Geraghty as their local election candidate for the Castlebar Electoral Area in June's local elections.

With a strong commitment to serving his community and a wealth of experience in volunteer service and local businesses, Mr Geraghty said he brings a fresh perspective and a determination to drive positive change in Castlebar.

"If elected, I pledge to be the voice of common sense and honesty on the Mayo County Council, representing every individual in our area,” he said.

Born and bred in Castlebar, the 32-year-old said he has been deeply embedded in the life and spirit of the town for over three decades.

His extensive volunteer work with the Castlebar Order of Malta Ambulance Corps and as a Community First Responder with the HSE National Ambulance Service reflects his dedication to community well-being and mental health support.

In 2017, Mr Geraghty played a role in establishing the Darkness Into Light Castlebar walk for suicide prevention, showcasing his commitment to addressing critical issues affecting the community.

Professionally, he serves as a support staff member at Mayo University Hospital and manages a small family business, Geraghty Fuels Castlebar, alongside his father.

A proud supporter of Castlebar Celtic FC, Mr Geraghty said he is ‘committed to promoting sports and recreation within our community'.

The candidate's local priorities include advocating strongly for those overlooked by other parties, pushing for real action on long-standing projects, such as the Imperial Hotel and Military barracks, and as well as addressing basic community needs like road maintenance and hedge cutting.

Furthermore, he is supporting the establishment of a new school for Castlebar Educate Together and is committed to increasing affordable housing options for young people in the area.

Michael Fitzmaurice TD said he is ‘delighted to support Donal Geraghty's candidacy for Castlebar LEA.

"Donal's dedication to community service and his pragmatic approach to local issues make him an ideal representative for Castlebar. I have every confidence that he will be a strong voice for the people of the town and surrounding areas,” he concluded.
