'An exceptional teacher and friendly gentleman' - Tributes paid to former Mayo principal

Tributes have been paid to a former Mayo national school principal following his passing. 

John Flannery of “Shalom’’, Lord Edward Street, Ballina, Co Mayo passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his residence after a long illness.

A former principal of Behy National School, John is survived by his wife Ann, his children Louise, Brian and Pamela, and his grandchildren Emily, Katie, Sophie, and Gemma.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, daughters, son, grandchildren, sons-in-law Gerry Loftus, Johnny Carlin, daughter-in-law Maria, his sisters and brothers, in-laws, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends, according to his death notice. 

On the condolences section on RIP.ie, one person wrote: "Sincere condolences to Ann and family on the death of your much loved husband and Dad. Remembering you all at this difficult time with prayer. John was an exceptional teacher and friendly gentleman. Rest in Peace John."

A tribute from local GAA Club Ballina Stephenites said: "We offer our condolences to the Flannery family, and extended members, on the passing of John. May he rest in peace."

Another mourner wrote: "A true gentleman. Condolences to all the family."

John will be reposing at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Wednesday evening, January 15, from 5.30pm until 7pm.

His Requiem Mass will be held at St Muredach’s Cathedral in Ballina, on Thursday, January 16, at 11.30am, followed by burial in Leigue Cemetery.
