Tributes paid to former Mayo post office worker in wake of passing

THE death took place in recent weeks in the kind care of the staff at the D’Alton Community Nursing Home of Mary (Mai) Gormley (nee Foy), Boherduff, Claremorris, Mayo.

Mai was a lady blessed with a gentle, kind and compassionate nature who was a lovely neighbour and friend and a popular member of the local community in the Boherduff and Knock Road area.

The Gormley family have always contributed generously to the community spirit of Claremorris down through the years. Mai had many friends around the region and always enjoyed sharing time with them and reminiscing about olden times.

The Mayo Roscommon Foundation was among those that joined in the tribute to Mai.

“We were deeply saddened by the passing of Mai whose long term dedication to the Foundation as a member and treasurer of our Claremorris Support Group touched many lives. Her kindness and commitment will always be remembered.”

Kathleen McGrenra (nee McManus) said she had many memories of Mai working as a telephonist in Claremorris Post Office. Flor Higgins said: “Mai was a lady and we enjoyed many nights of the game of bridge.”

Richard Carney was also among those joining in the tributes. “I remember Mai when she was my good neighbour in Mount Street and since then she has always been a friend.”

Reposing was in Gilligan’s Funeral Home with removal to St Coman’s Church. Interment took place in Barnacarroll cemetery following the funeral Mass.

Mai, who was predeceased by her husband Brian in 2007, her sister Peggy and brothers Paddy and John, will be sadly missed by her daughters Sheila and Helen, sons Vinnie and Brian, daughter-in-law Carol, sons-in-law Niall and Ollie, grandchildren Mark, Ruth, Eve, Oisín, Sadhbh, Max, Izzy and Rory, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends.
