Once again, there has been a spate of success for Mayo handball over the weekend, with a trio of handballers from the county making the trip to Valencia in Spain for the Spanish Open.
Claremorris duo Niall Joyce and Paddy Murphy have been to the fore in recent months, culminating with them bringing the title of All-Ireland Senior Hardball champions back west.
On Sunday, September 28, the dynamic duo brought their skills to the shores of the Mediterranean to great effect, reaching the doubles decider.
They were up against it against a heavily-fancied Team GB pairing in Pann Chai and Sahil Shah, but they rose to the occasion, defeating the pair 15-3 and 15-7 to take home the crown.
They weren’t the only Mayo men flying the flag on the continent, nor were they the only winners.
Ollie Cassidy was part of a doubles pair with Darren Flynn from Collooney, who took home the Doubles Masters crown. Before that, though, the Swinford man took on Graham Casburn of Moycullen in the singles final, winning 15-14, 15-9 to make it a memorable weekend abroad.
