A local representative has hit out at people who left a large quantity of rubbish by the shores of Lough Carra.

Cllr Patsy O’Brien called for people to bring their rubbish home with them after bags of rubbish were left strewn along the Brownstown area of the south Mayo lake.

The recent sunny weather has drawn large numbers of people to lakes and beaches around Mayo, including Lough Carra.

“I know people are out enjoying themselves in the fine weather, but this is no way to leave this beautiful area. Please bring your rubbish home,” said Cllr O’Brien on a post on Facebook, which attracted a large number of comments condemning those who left their rubbish by the lake.

Speaking on Midwest Radio this afternoon (Friday), Cllr O’Brien said the local community had been ‘upset’ by the way the lake was left.

The Independent councillor said that Mayo County Council do not usually provide bins near lakes.

“When I was a young fella, there wasn’t as much of this going on. People came there, and they always adhered to the local community as such. The local community is upset in what happened in relation to what has happened yesterday evening, and I don’t blame them. They try to keep the area as best they can, and when this is left after them.”

Cllr O’Brien said the local community gathered up some of the litter and contacted the county council’s litter warden to try and identify the culprits.
