Castlebar athlete completes World Marathon Major in an impressive time while representing Ireland on the streets of Sydney
Castlebar runner Fiona Naughton has achieved an impressive result at the Sydney Marathon yesterday (Sunday, August 30), finishing as the first Irish woman home in a time of 2 hours and 47 minutes.
Originally from Mayo, Fiona is now living in Sydney, Australia, where she has continued to develop her running career.
Her performance came as the Sydney Marathon continues to grow in international prominence, having recently joined the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors series.
The race attracts runners from around the globe and has a particularly strong connection with Ireland, given the large Irish community living throughout Australia.
Completing the demanding marathon distance in 2:47 places her among the leading Irish women in the race.
Her result is also a source of pride for the Mayo running community, with Naughton combining her life in Australia with her connection to her home county.
