The Family Centre, Castlebar has announced significant leadership changes as it embarks on a new chapter of growth and development.
Local solicitor Nessa Cox has been appointed Chairperson of the Board, succeeding Helen Fahey, who steps down after 15 years of dedicated service. Helen’s tenure was marked by pivotal guidance and support for the Centre, helping it remain a key resource for families and individuals across Mayo.
The Centre also welcomes Sinéad O’Malley, a native of Newport, as the new Head of Services. She succeeds Máire Ní Dhomhnaill, who retired in late 2025 following a distinguished 20-year career dedicated to supporting the community.
“Máire’s impact over the past two decades cannot be overstated,” said Chairperson Nessa Cox, speaking about Máire’s retirement. “Her leadership, care, and commitment have touched countless lives across our community. On behalf of the Board, I want to sincerely thank her for her extraordinary service and wish her every happiness in her well-deserved retirement.”
“It is a real privilege to take on the role of Head of Services at The Family Centre. The Centre has a long-standing and highly respected reputation for supporting individuals and families with compassion and professionalism, and I am honoured to build on that legacy,” commented Sinéad O’Malley on her new role. “I look forward to working with the team, the Board, and our community partners to continue developing and expanding services to meet the needs of people across Mayo.”

The leadership transitions coincide with a strategic growth phase for the Centre. The Board is developing a five-year strategic plan focused on expanding services and enhancing support for the community.
Key initiatives include low-cost counselling, the Mayo Suicide Bereavement Liaison Service (MSBLS), the Care Leaver programme Care to Connect, and Flourish Social Prescribing.
“This is an exciting time for The Family Centre. We are building on very strong foundations, and with new leadership in place, we are focused on growing our services and strengthening our impact across Mayo,” said Nessa Cox. “We are committed to ensuring accessible, meaningful supports are available to those who need them most.”
The Centre continues to prioritise its core mission: supporting wellbeing, strengthening families, and fostering a connected, resilient community.
