Nationally, a total of 559 admitted patients are waiting for beds, with 361 patients in emergency departments. 

Newly released figures show overcrowding increases at Mayo University Hospital

Overcrowding is on the rise again at Mayo University Hospital, with over 30 patients awaiting a bed across departments.

In figures released today (Tuesday, March 31) by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, a total of 32 patients are without beds at MUH.

Of the figures, 15 are in the emergency department, and a further 17 are in wards elsewhere.

Nationally, a total of 559 admitted patients are waiting for beds, with 361 patients in the emergency department. 

Earlier this month, Councillor Michael Loftus made calls for seven-day services in all hospitals. 

Responding to his comments, Integrated Health Area Manager for Mayo, Mary Warde, outlined the hospital’s continued focus on increasing weekend activity. She said these measures are intended to “help support patient flow over recent months.”
