A special commemorative event in Castlebar has marked the centenary of the Easter Lily, honouring the legacy of Cumann na mBan and their role in Ireland’s fight for independence.
Organised by Sinn Féin, the inaugural Irish Republican lecture brought together attendees to reflect on the contribution of women during the revolutionary period, 100 years after Cumann na mBan first introduced the Easter Lily as a symbol of remembrance for those involved in the 1916 Rising.
The event featured a presentation by local historian Noel Campbell, who delivered an in-depth talk on the history and significance of Cumann na mBan and the women who played key roles in Ireland’s struggle for freedom.
Organisers expressed their appreciation to Mr Campbell for his contribution, as well as to all those who attended the event.
The gathering also recognised the continued importance of commemorating the ideals set out in the 1916 Proclamation, with particular emphasis on the role of women in shaping Ireland’s past and future.
