The community at Castlebar Swimming Club are aiming to collectively swim the entire length of the River Shannon in one day in order to bring vital funds to an important Mayo service for children with cancer.

On Saturday, May 16, the club will collectively swim a whopping 360 kilometres, the length of Ireland's longest river from its source on the slopes of Cuilcagh Mountain in Cavan, all the way to where it flows into the Atlantic in Limerick.

For context, that is the equivalent of swimming the length of the pool at the Lough Lannagh Swimming Complex 1,440 times.

The club have elected to complete this endeavour for a very worthy cause. Up to 50 swimmers will complete the distance in relay format.

The eight-bed Sunflower Children's Hospice will be the first of its kind in the West of Ireland, and will serve the people of eight counties when it opens its doors.

Castlebar Swimming Club is attempting to raise €20,000 in the next month. A total of 70 per cent of all funds raised will go to charity, while the remainder will be allocated to developing the club.

A total of €375 has been donated since the fundraiser started at the start of the week.

You can donate to the cause using the group's GoFundMe page by clicking here.
