The commemorative events will conclude on Wednesday, December 10, International Human Rights Day, with a ceremony at Lough Lannagh hosted by SAFE Ireland.

Mayo will join communities across the globe in marking the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence, running from November 25 to December 10, with a strong focus this year on the theme “Unite to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls.” The campaign highlights digital violence as one of the fastest-growing forms of abuse.

Leading the local efforts, the Soroptimist Club of Castlebar has organised a wide range of events beginning on November 23, aimed at raising awareness and encouraging public engagement throughout the county.

The first event will take place this Sunday, November 23, with a candlelight vigil at 11 am in Market Square, Castlebar. The vigil will feature guest speakers Lorraine Toner from the Mayo Rape Crisis Centre and Rose Conway-Walsh TD, along with a musical performance by Mick Mulchrone.

The official UN campaign begins on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. To mark the day in Mayo, a flag-raising ceremony will take place at 1 pm at ATU Castlebar.

On Wednesday, December 3, Professor Nata Duvvury of the University of Galway will deliver a public talk at ATU Castlebar, exploring the social and economic consequences of violence against women.

The commemorative events will conclude on Wednesday, December 10, International Human Rights Day, with a ceremony at Lough Lannagh hosted by SAFE Ireland. At 11 am, lilies will be placed on the water in remembrance of all women killed in domestic violence incidents in Ireland since 1996.

Throughout the 16 Days, people across Mayo are encouraged to wear orange, the UN’s designated colour symbolising hope and a brighter future free from violence and fear.
