The weekend has seen a significant hike in those presenting to the Emergency Department in Mayo University Hospital.
The statistics, provided by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), show that a high volume of patients have been coming to the Castlebar facility since last Friday.
This is most prevalent in terms of those awaiting treatment in the Emergency department. On Friday (September 12), only one patient was in the department. Today (Monday, September 15), that figure has shot up to ten.
There has also been a spike, albeit a less dramatic one, in those waiting to be seen elsewhere in the ward. Friday saw 13 people waiting for beds. Today, it is up to 15.
Cumulatively, the overall number has gone up by 11, from 14 to 25 over the weekend.
Today's numbers see MUH sit in seventh place in the INMO 'Trolley Watch' standings, between Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda (26 patients), and Saint Luke's General Hospital, Kilkenny (22 patients) respectively.
Earlier this month, Paul Lawless TD (Aontú) moved to describe the understaffing issues in MUH as a 'crisis'.
“I know of one man who waited over 13 hours in an ambulance outside MUH awaiting handover," he stated. "The handover was unable to take place due to staff shortages. The staff were heroic, but the system is broken."
