'Aurora Over the Altacooney River' and 'Atlantic Sea Thrift' are Shane Lavelle's entries in the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies phuotography competition in the 'Back on Earth' landscape category
A Mayo photographer’s stunning snaps of the night sky have been shortlisted for the next stage of the prestigious Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies astrophotography competition.
Castlebar photographer Shane Lavelle is well known both in the county and further afield for his top-class abilities with a camera and a lens, and his progression in this competition is a well-deserved recognition of his dedication to his craft.

Two have his photographs have received recognition.
The first, title ‘Atlantic Sea Thrift’, beautifully depicts the constellations over Achill Island, while ‘Aurora Over the Altacooney River’ captures the aurora borealis in all their splendour above Letterkeen.
Shane’s work is shortlisted in the ‘Back on Earth’ landscape category, having also been nominated for the accolade in 2024.
There are two awards available. The first is selected by a panel of judges comprised of many leading figures in Irish astronomy, as well as Alan Betson, a photographer with The Irish Times.

There is also a Public Choice Award, selected by the public. Those wishing to vote for his pictures can do so by clicking here. Voting closes on Thursday, July 24.
