Castlebar Celtics FAI Junior Cup dreams were dashed by a sudden 94th-minute goal from Galway citys Salthill Devon this afternoon.
Colin Kellys winner came after a high-octane, fast-paced game of soccer where Castlebar Celtic played very well but created very few clear-cut chances against an excellent Salthill Devon defence.
The game was played at 100 miles per hour from the word go, with neither team holding back with or without the ball.
Celtic made some good incursions on the land and air. However, a steadfast Salthill Devon held an attack-minded Celtic scoreless.
The visitors forced some good saves from Stefan Hester but spent most of the first half trying to contain Celtics lightning-quick passing game.
A highly entertaining first half ended scoreless. Celtic were better again in the second half but couldnt find the net despite an inspiring display from full-back Mark Cunningham.
It only took four minutes for a score to arrive in extra-time when Shane ORourke got on the end of a cross and fed Colin Kelly to finish the winning goal from close range.
The Mayo Super League and Connacht Cup champions had a mountain to climb to find an equaliser against an impregnable Salthill defence. That equaliser never came, and Salthill Devon advanced to the FAI Junior Cup semi-final while Celtic look forward to a Connacht Junior Cup clash with St Johns Athletic in Roscommon next weekend.
A full report plus reaction from both sides will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
