Hugh Molloy from St Anne's BC won his second Irish title over the weekend to the delight of his coaches Danny Coughlan, Paul Mullen and Tomas Moran
MANY of Mayo’s most talented boxers battled for Irish titles over the weekend in the National Stadium in Dublin.
The talented punchers represented their clubs brilliantly and there were scenes of great emotion when the final bells sounded.
In the Boy 2 category, Hugh Molloy of St Anne’s Boxing Club in Westport claimed glory when he overcame John Keenan from the Glen in Cork.
His coaches Tom Moran, Paul Mullen and Danny Coughlan were overjoyed.
In the 63kg contest, Swinford’s Ella Staunton lost out to Nadia Maj from the Sacre Coeur club while Ballina’s Peter Maughan lost out to Tommy Lee McCarthy from Mayfield.
In the Boy/Girl 3 category, Roisin Sheerin from Swinford claimed victory in the 57kg when she got the better of Alicia Ennis.
This was a seminal moment for Sheerin who had been beaten in two previous national finals, but there was no denying her on this occasion. At 37kg Millie O’Sullivan from Ballyhaunis lost out to Ria Kelly in a well-contested bout.
In the Boy 1 category, Ballaghaderreen’s Muhammad Hussain lost out in the final of the 25kg contest while Niamh Conlon of Ballyhaunis secured glory in the 31kg contest thanks to a superb display.
There was more glory for Ballyhaunis when Roisin Webb won the 41.5kg contest. At 51kg Geesala’s Frankie Brogan was crowned champion to the delight of her big following.
Charlestown’s Noah Rego lost out in the 56kg final while Aaron Moran also from Charlestown lost out in the 79kg final on a weekend that showcased all that’s good in Mayo boxing.
