There is a huge sense of sadness in Ballycroy and the surrounding area as news spreads of the death of George Sweeney who passed away peacefully at Galway University Hospital following a short illness.
The deceased was a very popular and prominent member of the local community where he led the well-known family business. Since his passing, many memories have been shared of George's interactions with customers when he traversed the area in his popular travelling shop and his position in the local community.
He brought humour to everything he did and conversations could touch on anything from world affairs, global sport, local news, general positivity and interesting happenings. George was a passionate supporter of all community developments and a former main sponsor of the local Ballycroy GAA Club.
The Sweeney family business is a long-established staple of Ballycroy life and George's service to his customers and the locality will be long remembered.
Predeceased by his parents George P and Anne, his brother Tony, sisters Kathleen, Una and little sister Ann, nephew George and niece Maura.
George will be sadly missed by his heartbroken wife Mary, sons Eóin and Fergus, daughters-in-law Martha and Helen, his adored grandchildren Holly, Emma, Ciarán and Dáire his brothers Fr. Eamonn (Scotland), Joe (Dublin) and by his sisters Helen Kelly (Bonniconlon) Mary Quinn (Waterford) and Nuala Corcoran (Dublin) brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews extend relatives, his wonderful neighbours and his wide circle of friends.
George will repose at the family Funeral Home, Sweeney’s (F28KF20) on Wednesday, April 1 from 4 until 7pm with removal to the Church of the Holy Family, Ballycroy arriving at 7.30pm for reception and Funeral Mass.
Funeral liturgy will take place on Holy Thursday morning at 11am with burial afterwards in the local cemetery.
Funeral Mass on Wednesday and Funeral Liturgy on Thursday will both be live-streamed on Holy Family Church, Ballycroy Facebook page. Family flowers only. Donations if desired to Mayo-Roscommon Hospice c/o Sweeney Funeral Directors Ballycroy.
