A painting by artist Padraig McCaul which is part of a solo exhibition in Dublin
The experience of living on a Mayo island for ten years is the inspiration behind an artist's latest solo exhibition which will take place in Dublin this month.
Banshees, Cuckoos and Other Stories is a new collection of paintings by artist Padraig McCaul which will be on display at a solo exhibition in the The Doorway Gallery, Dublin running from August 9 to 30.
Drawing on his favourite places of inspiration on Achill Island and the Mayo coast, along with themes of family and togetherness, the exhibition continues Padraig's love affair with the island which was his home for ten years.
“The ever changing skies and moods are the starting point of most of my work and wrap themselves around the ubiquitous cottages and farm buildings that I have been painting for many years now. Their purpose is to draw you into the landscape, the colours and textures aim to create the emotional connection. The Atlantic Ocean features prominently in these paintings, being ever present when you are living on an island,” Padraig said about the exhibition.

After spending ten years on Achill, Padraig and his family moved in 2022 to Mullingar which he said is a “very different proposition with its lakes and trees, but it has allowed me to enjoy seeing Achill through fresh eyes, as if for the first time. And so the Minaun Cliffs, Keel Beach, Slievemore Mountain all take on new life for me.”

The exhibition is also a celebration of almost 20 years exhibiting with Denise Donnelly and the Doorway Gallery.
“To mark the occasion we will have a special exhibition launch on Saturday, August 16, from 2pm to 5pm, which will feature a special performance by singer/songwriter Donal O'Connor. Donal is an inspired songwriter and storyteller and friend who I have had the privilege of playing and recording with over the years. Many of his songs are inspired by Achill and the music sessions we have enjoyed playing in together on the island. I’ll be bringing my saxophone along, and some other musician friends, so expect some fine music from Donal and a taste of the ‘Achill Session’ , surrounded by paintings inspired by the Achill landscape,” Padraig said.
