Gardaí have warned of traffic congestion at Keem Bay in Achill
An Garda Síochána in Mayo advises visitors to Achill Island to avoid Keem Bay as it is packed to capacity.
This afternoon, Gardaí in Mayo posted a message on its Facebook page advising people not to go to Keem as there is no parking and traffic congestion is causing serious delays.
“We are advised by our colleagues on Achill Island, that Keem Bay car parks are at capacity, and traffic congestion is causing serious delays in the area.

“We are kindly asking the public not to travel to Keem Bay at this time. Please consider visiting the other beautiful beaches nearby, and help us keep the roads safe, and accessible for emergency vehicles,” the post read.
Keem Bay beach on Achill Island is one of the most high profile beaches in Ireland having been named as the only Irish beach to be named as one of the top 100 beaches in the world by travel publisher Lonely Planet and was recently named the eighth most beautiful beach in the world.
The scene was also a location for the Hollywood movie, The Banshees of Inisherin and the publicity surrounding the beach has led to increased numbers of people visiting it. However, parking close to the beach is limited and with only one minor road leading to it, it often results in traffic congestion and the closure of the road.
This has led to calls for better facilities at the beauty spot and in recent years a beach ranger has been employed by Mayo County Council.
