The Deserted Village on Achill Island
SIX Mayo heritage groups have received funding under the Heritage Council's Community Heritage Grant Scheme including funding for a management study of the Deserted Village in Achill.
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage announced funding totalling €103,916 which will be provided for six Mayo groups under the Heritage Council's Community Heritage Grant Scheme.
Mayo TD, Minister Dara Calleary confirmed the funding for the groups this morning on his Facebook page with €25,000 allocated to the Ballina Convent Regeneration CLG Rainwater Goods for the Ballina Sisters of Mercy Convent.
The next largest allocation of €24,600 went to the Burrishoole Parish Newport Parish Church Conservation Management Plan while the Friends of Mayo Dark Skies Community Constellations for Dark Skies received €22,580.
Achill-based councillor Paul McNamara welcomed the allocation of €20,000 to Achill Tourism for the Deserted Village Conservation Management Plan.
The funding will allow Achill Tourism to undertake a detailed and comprehensive conservation management plan for the internationally famous Deserted Village on Achill Island. The plan is to assess the history, cultural significance, biodiversity and current conditions of the village and its settings and to assess the threats to its significance, outline a conservation strategy and make recommendations for enhancement, improved management and interpretation.
“I am delighted to announce €20,000 of funding for Turasoireacht Acla - Achill Tourism Deserted Village Slievemore. This funding will be used to undertake a comprehensive conservation management plan,” Cllr McNamara stated on his Facebook page and thanked Minister Calleary for helping to secure the funding.
Other groups to receive funding were the Michael Davitt Museum Conservation Survey Report €6,447 which received €6,447 while the Turlough Archaeological and Heritage Society Audioguide and Activity Sheet received €5,289.
