A PLANNING application has been lodged with Mayo County Council to convert a former popular pub in Achill into a gardening training centre.

A Section 5 planning declaration has been sought by Klaus and Joanna Laitenberger to repurpose the former Way Inn pub in Tonragee, Achill into a training and education space.

The Way Inn pub which is located along the R319 between Mulranny and Achill Sound had been a well established pub run by the Murphy family in the village of Tonragee from the early 1970s up until it closed around 2020. The property which also includes an adjacent two-storey dwelling house was subsequently put up for sale and was sold last year.

Since the purchase of the property, a greenhouse was recently developed on the grounds of the property and the planning application states that the building will host small, pre-booked workshops on organic gardening and sustainability.

In accordance with Section 5 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 as amended any person may request a declaration as to whether development is exempt and this usually applies to developments of a minor nature.

A decision on the planning application is due to be made by Mayo County Council in mid June.
