Rebuilding work has commenced on the High Chapparal in Geesala
THE owners of a Geesala pub that burned to the ground in a fire have begun rebuilding their establishment.
Reconstruction of The High Chapparal, locally known as ‘Munnellys’, commenced recently. It is hoped that it will be open by August in time for the Geesala Festival, which draws thousands of visitors to the Erris village each August.
Last month, the pub was destroyed when a fire caught hold in the early hours of February 7. Nobody was injured in the blaze.
In a Facebook post after the fire, the owners said that memories ‘will be made again’ in the pub, which hosted numerous gatherings over the years.
Local county councillor Gerry Coyle welcomed the rebuilding of the pub as ‘great news’ and paid tribute to the ‘resilience’ of the local community.
“The people of Geesala, they’re fighters,” Cllr Coyle told The Mayo News.
The High Chapparal has been run by the Munnelly family for 75 years and was the last remaining pub in Geesala.
