Chairperson of Belcarra Tidy Towns, Mary B Prendergast, welcomed pupils from Third, Fourth and Fifth Classes of Belcarra National School, accompanied by their teachers, to mark the occasion.

Belcarra Tidy Towns officially launched its new public Water Refill Station on Thursday, June 25, in an event that brought together local schoolchildren, community groups, and representatives from a number of organisations committed to sustainability and environmental awareness.

Chairperson of Belcarra Tidy Towns, Mary B. Prendergast, welcomed pupils from Third, Fourth and Fifth Classes of Belcarra National School, accompanied by their teachers, to mark the occasion.

Also in attendance were members of Belcarra Tidy Towns and Belcarra Community Council, along with Deirdre O'Neill, Development Officer with the National Federation of Group Water Schemes (NFGWS); Kate Wieczorkiewicz, Community Water Officer with LAWPRO; Laura Dixon, Climate Action Co-ordinator with Mayo County Council; and Lynda Huxley, representing the Belcarra Biodiversity Group.

During the launch, Mary Prendergast acknowledged the many individuals and organisations whose support made the project possible. Special thanks were extended to the National Federation of Group Water Schemes for funding the Water Refill Station, contractor Declan Biggins for carrying out the installation works, and Sean Nestor, whose vision in helping establish Belcarra Community Co-op and Belcarra Group Water Scheme in 1975 ensured that every home in the area had access to a reliable group water supply.

Tribute was also paid to the dedicated volunteers of Belcarra Tidy Towns for their ongoing work in maintaining the village's attractive appearance, as well as to the local Rural Social Scheme (RSS) workers for their continued support of community projects.

As part of the celebration, each pupil received a reusable refill water bottle and a copy of ‘All About Water’, sponsored by Belcarra Community Co-op and the National Federation of Group Water Schemes.
