Mayo basketball team bows out at league semi-final

St Muredach's Ballina lose against St Mary's Portlaoise in the All-Ireland U-19 'A' League semi-final

Mayo basketball team bows out at All-Ireland semi-final

The St Muredach's Ballina U-19 basketball team.

They did Mayo proud in the last year and a half. St Muredach's Ballina basketball boys first won a historic first ever double on 'B' level, clinching the All-Ireland league and cup titles in impressive fashion.

And they kept winning, thank to the fact that the team stayed mostly together. The Moysiders stormed into the All-Ireland Cup 'A' final, boosted by talents like Mark Cunningham, Nathan Roddy, Brian Donoghue and Cian Morrison.

Unfortunately for them, their bid for a first ever 'A' crown was denied by St Mary's Portlaoise

But head coach Barry Murphy and his boys were still in the All-Ireland League competition. And they won their quarter-final against Templeogue 87-74. In the semi-final then, St Muredach's faced the same opposition they lost the cup final to just a week ago. And again St Mary's Portlaoise were victorious.

It's the end of another fantastic season for the Ballina boys. It was the Last Dance in the 'Mighty' Muredach's jersey for Mark Cunningham, Brian Donoghue, James O'Boyle and Alan Birrane. They've completed their journey with the school and it will ne up to Barry Murphy to build a new team next season.
