River Moy swim set to return as highlight of Mayo town’s salmon festival
Historic river race offers swimmers the chance to take on one of Ireland’s oldest open-water events
One of Mayo’s most iconic sporting events is set to return this summer as the River Moy Swim takes place on Saturday, July 18, as part of the annual Ballina Salmon Festival programme.
The much-anticipated event offers participants the opportunity to become part of Ballina’s sporting history by competing in one of Ireland’s oldest river swims, set against the scenic backdrop of the River Moy along the Wild Atlantic Way.
Swimmers of all abilities will have the chance to take part, with three race options available. Competitors can choose from the flagship 2.5km swim, the popular 600m distance, or a dedicated 600m youth swim.
Organisers say the event continues to grow in popularity each year, attracting swimmers from Mayo and across the country who are eager to test themselves in one of Ireland’s most picturesque river settings.
The River Moy Swim has become a key fixture in the Ballina Salmon Festival calendar, combining competitive sport with the town’s rich connection to the famous salmon river.
Adding to the excitement ahead of the event, organisers have partnered with local businesses to launch a special race weekend giveaway. One lucky winner will receive a prize package that includes an overnight stay for two at Twin Trees Hotel & Leisure Club on Friday, July 17, dinner for two at The Cot & Cobble, and entry into the River Moy Swim 2026.
The competition is being run in conjunction with Mayo North Tourism and aims to showcase Ballina as a destination for sport, tourism and outdoor adventure.
The winner will be announced on June 29 through official Mayo North Tourism social media channels.
With the countdown now underway, swimmers are being encouraged to save the date and watch the River Moy Swim social media channels for further details on registration, race information and festival updates.
