Mayo town to celebrate Argentina Day as Admiral Brown’s 250th anniversary approaches

Foxford will honour Argentine naval hero with community celebrations, cultural performances and international guests
Foxford is preparing to celebrate its unique connection with Argentina as the town hosts its annual Argentina Day celebrations on Saturday, June 20, while also launching the countdown to the 250th anniversary of Admiral William Brown’s birth in 2027.
The event will mark the 249th anniversary of the birth of the Foxford-born founder of the Argentine Navy, who remains one of Argentina’s most revered national figures and a lasting symbol of the deep ties between Ireland and Argentina.
Born in Foxford on June 22, 1777, Admiral Brown emigrated to Argentina as a child and went on to become known as the “Father of the Argentine Navy” and the “Father of the Seas”. Nearly 250 years later, his legacy continues to unite communities on both sides of the Atlantic.
This year’s celebrations are expected to attract visitors from across Ireland and beyond, including representatives of the Irish and Argentine embassies, members of the Admiral Brown Society and supporters of the long-standing Mayo-Argentina connection.
Among the distinguished guests expected to attend are Argentine Ambassador to Ireland, Ana Cachaza, and Irish Ambassador to Argentina, Olive Hempenstall, highlighting the significance of the occasion for both countries.
The day’s programme will begin with prayers at Craggagh Cemetery at 11.15am, followed by Mass in St Michael’s Church at noon. A wreath-laying ceremony at the Admiral Brown Monument on Church Road will take place at 1pm before participants follow the Admiral Brown Trail to the River Moy Promenade. Celebrations will conclude with a reception in Admiral Brown Hall at 3pm.
A lively cultural programme is also planned, featuring Argentine tango performances, interactive dance showcases and a strong football-themed atmosphere as Foxford once again embraces its well-known affection for Argentina and its national team. Visitors can expect to see the town decorated in the famous blue and white colours associated with Argentina, while Argentine-themed tractors and displays are set to add to the festivities.
International content creator Juanjo Marco will also attend to document the celebrations, bringing further international attention to the unique relationship between Foxford and Argentina.
Representatives of the Irish Naval Service are expected to take part in the event, recognising the shared maritime heritage between the two nations and the enduring legacy of Admiral Brown’s achievements.
The 2026 celebrations carry added significance as they officially launch preparations for a major programme of commemorative events planned for 2027 to mark the 250th anniversary of Admiral Brown’s birth. Organisers are working with partners in Ireland and Argentina to develop cultural exchanges, heritage projects and international events, with discussions ongoing regarding a potential visit by the Argentine Naval Training Ship ARA Libertad.
Mairéad Melody Carr, Manager of Mayo North Tourism, said Admiral Brown’s story represents one of Mayo’s most important international connections.
“The forthcoming 250th anniversary presents a unique opportunity to showcase Foxford and Mayo on an international stage,” she said.
Margaret Reilly, Chairperson of the Admiral Brown Society, said the celebrations are about honouring a remarkable Mayo man while strengthening the friendship between Ireland and Argentina.
“Each year we gather to honour Admiral Brown’s achievements and the enduring friendship between our two countries. The 2026 celebrations are especially significant as we begin the countdown to the 250th anniversary in 2027,” she said.
The Admiral Brown Society, with support from Mayo County Council, has extended an open invitation to the public to attend the celebrations and take part in a day that highlights one of Mayo’s most remarkable international success stories.
