Photography lovers in Mayo are encouraged to get to Ballina to witness the best snaps that Ireland has to offer, as an exhibition from Press Photographers Ireland is set to touch down in the local library from Tuesday, July 8, to Saturday, July 28.

The exhibition is compiled of award winners in the annual awards ceremony from the group, and includes two Mayo photographers.

Conor McKeown scooped the first-place prize in the ‘Nature and the Environment’ category for his stunning snap of a swimmer braving the elements with a snow-capped Croagh Patrick in the background, which appeared on the front page of The Mayo News on January 23, 2024.

Another Mayo photographer, Michael McLaughlin, was awarded first place in the ‘Portrait’ category for his fantastic image of Foxford native Ben Burke, in his blacksmith’s forge alongside Penny the partridge.

In total, 110 images from across the spectrum of Irish life, from sports to music and everything in between, will be available for viewing.

The Press Photographers Ireland president, David Branigan, expressed his excitement at the event touching down in North Mayo.

“We are delighted that our exhibition is visiting Ballina once again,” said Mr Branigan, “and we hope that visitors from the local area and beyond will enjoy browsing through the award-winning and highly acclaimed imagery, which demonstrates the hard work and commitment of our Irish press photographers.”
