University of Galway hosts Foróige Mayo for science workshop

Foróige members from Mayo were offered a chance to sample some of the best in science University of Galway has to offer at a series of STEAM workshops.

In total, 120 young enthusiasts were present at the event, which aimed to showcase multiple strands of science, technology, engineering, arts, and maths (making the STEAM acronym).

The event was funded by the Research Ireland Discover Programme and is a joint initiative between the University of Galway ReelLIFE SCIENCE programme and Foróige’s GO Digital Youth Work Team.

The children, aged between ten and 18, were involved in a series of workshops to expand their interests, including music production, stop-motion animation, and green screen animation.

At the end of the day, the participants showcased their work, which included LEGO robotics, coding, and animation.

Foróige GO Digital’s Senior Youth Officer, Megan Depinna, believed those who attended the event found it thoroughly enjoyable.

“The ReelLIFE SCIENCE STEAM Showcase is a fantastic opportunity for young people involved in Foróige to explore their interests in science, technology, engineering, arts, and maths in a hands-on and creative way,” she stated.

“It’s the perfect launchpad for creativity and discovery.”

The event serves as part of a wider initiative, encouraging entries from young people to the ReelLiife Science competition.

Since 2013, more than 29,000 young people, supported by teachers and youth workers in 790 schools and youth groups, have taken part in the competition, which challenges children around the country to engage with science and technology while simultaneously developing communication and digital skills.
