Mayo quizzers crowned champions at national Credit Union quiz

Two Mayo schools were to the fore in the National Credit Union Schools Quiz Final.

The event, which was held in the RDS in Dublin on Sunday, April 6, was the culmination of the competition which sees over 25,000 entrants every year. At the quiz, the 88 best teams from across the country represented their regions on the national stage.

In the Under-13 competition, Quignamanger National School from Ballina were crowned champion.

The school, represented by Michael Duffy, Iarla Hannon, Gareth Doyle, and Cian Gillespie, beat joint runners-up from counties Wicklow and Kilkenny.

Mayo also saw success in the Under-11 category. Scoil Mhuire Claremorris were to the fore in this age range, finishing as joint up alongside Maynooth Boys’ National School.

The four-person team of Saoirse Gill, Sophie Karasiewicz, Jack Carney, and Dean Donovan performed well to bring home the title, only being bettered by Holy Family National School from Kerry.

The event was hosted by John Sharpson, who is well known for his work as a presenter on RTÉ.

All participants came in for particular praise from Martin Busch, the president of the Irish League of Credit Unions.

“This year’s competition showcased an extraordinary level of intelligence, determination, and team spirit among the competitors,” Busch stated. “Watching these young minds in action fills us with pride and optimism for the future.”
